I just read about the A4 study for Alzheimer's. What is it?

The A4 (Anti-Amyloid Treatment in Asymptomatic Alzheimer's) Study is a clinical trial now enrolling volunteers.  The study is designed for people who have the earliest signs of Alzheimer's disease beginning in the brain but don't yet have any symptoms of the disease.

The study is enrolling healthy 65 - 85 year olds across the country who may be at risk for memory loss due to Alzheimer's disease.  Participants MUST meet inclusion and exclusion criteria.

According to the National Institute on Aging program information, the study will test whether an investigational drug can slow the progression of memory problems associated with amyloid, a protein that forms plaques in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease.  The A4 study is a phase III clinical trial for cognitively normal older adults whose brain scans show evidence of amyloid buildup.  Participants will take either the study drug (solanezumab) or a placebo as a monthly intravenous injection for a designated time period.

For more information about the A4 trial or study sites, call 1 844 247-8839 or email A4-participate@usc.edu.  The University of Pittsburgh recruiting site contact number is 412 692-2730.  There are over 65 study sites in the US and Canada.
