How do I pay for in home (non-medical) assistance?
Posted: November 20, 2014, 11:57AMIn home (non-medical) assistance is NOT covered by Medicare nor is a physician's referral needed. Most often, in- home assistance for sitting services, housekeeping assistance, and personal care assistance is paid for out-of-pocket.
Some states offer Waiver programs for those who qualify (financially and medically) although there are often waiting lists for aged and disabled Waiver programs. State programs may also offer some assistance, such as The Lighthouse program in WV, and hours of service may be limited. Long term care insurance coverage may be available for the care receiver but policies differ so don't assume that in home assistance is covered. (Check the policy!) If the care receiver is a veteran or a widow of a veteran (married to the veteran at the time of death), the Aid & Attendance Program for Veterans and Widows of Veterans may help - if program guidelines are met.
Other options may include 'freeing' up money for in home services. For example, if someone is a United Mine Workers of America beneficiary, there may be coverage for supplies or transportation expenses thereby saving money to dedicate to another need - such as in home assistance. The care receiver may qualify for special help with Medicare Part D or they may qualify for a Medicare Savings Program - again freeing up some money for in home assistance.
