How do I get ready for my doctor's appointment?
Posted: December 12, 2016, 11:16AMWhether you're seeing a new physician or continuing with a doctor with whom you're established, it helps to prepare.
Make a list of what you need to discuss. Do you need a flu shot / pneumonia vaccine / shingles vaccine? Do you have new symtoms or concerns? Prioritize your list. If you have something important, bring it up immediately. Don't wait until your appointment time is over. Contact us for a check list that will help you with this step.
Take information with you. Take your medications in the bottles (or accurately list your medications including full name of the drug, amount, dosage) and don't forget any over-the-counter medications, vitamins, herbal remedies or supplements. Make sure to hve your insurance cards, names and phone numbers of other doctors, and medical records/information on your medical history if your doctor doesn't have them.
Consider bringing a family member or friend. An extra set of eyes and ears is helpful, and they can take notes and remind you of important discussion points.
Do you wear glasses or hearing aids? Make sure to have them with you, and make sure your hearing aid is working well. Let your doctor and his/her staff know that you have a hard time with vision or hearing.
Update your doctor. Let your doctor know what has happened since your last visit. Have you been to the emergency room or a specialist? Mention weight changes, appetite changes, sleep changes or energy level changes. Has a specialist changed any of your medications?
If it's a new physician, introduce yourself with your full name and let them know what name you like to be called. Ask how the office is run: what days are busiest, what is the emergency process and what do you do if the office is closed.
The better you're prepared, the more productive your visit will be!
