How can I make the most of the time with my doctor?

Posted: January 5, 2017, 11:49AM

So - now that we've explored how to best talk to our doctor, let's summarize and look at how we can make the most of our appointment time.

Go in prepared.  Make a list of questions or concerns.  It's easy to forget a point you want to cover when you get in the exam room.

Take your medications with you including supplements, herbal preparations and over-the-counter medications.  Don't forget creams, eye drops, etc.

Are there changes in your health?  List the changes and symptoms. When did they occur?  How long have they been going on?  How frequently do you experience them?

Consider bringing a family member or friend.  Sometimes it helps to have an extra set of eyes and ears!

Learn about tests or other procedures that your doctor may order.  Be proactive.  Ask the questions!

Discuss your diagnosis or issues.  You need to understand so you can make good decisions with your doctor.

Ask about medications that are prescribed.  Are there special instructions?  Are there foods or drinks you should avoid?  What are side effects?  Do you understand how and when to take them?

Share information about special situations or sensitive subjects.  You need to be a care PARTNER with your physician.

Talk to your doctor about care in the event of a serious or life-threatening illness.  Does your doctor know what treatments you want - or don't want?  Do you have Advance Directives that can help guide your physician in the event you are unable to speak for yourself?   Make sure your doctor has copies of your Medical Power of Attorney and Living Will.

You can make the most of your time with your doctor by being informed.  Read about your health issues.  You can search on line but be sure to seek information from reputable sites.  The National Institutes of Health, Mayo Clinic, the Alzheimer's Association and Johns Hopkins are some examples and there are many more.  Watch highly commercial sites that have products to sell and are short on unbiased information.

Remember you need to be your own best health care advocate. Today's medical care is more of a partnership with your physician and you need to be proactive, informed, and open with your physician.  If you're having problems with your physician, do you need to consider a change?

Your health depends on your active involvement and the active involvement of your physician!
