How can I get my parents to use technology?
Posted: August 7, 2015, 12:00PMThere are several approaches to use.
Take it easy! Start with what your parents know. Are they already familiar with a cell phone? Explore texting and different functions of the phone.
Choose the right device. Perhaps a tablet or e-reader would be easier to use. Consider arthritic fingers, problems with vision or other age-related limitations that make devices more difficult. A tablet with a touch screen is much easier to use than the small keypad on the phone.
Offer to teach them how to use the device. Take it easy. Write down step-by-step instructions.
Can the grandkids or nieces and nephews help? It may be challenging for the adult child to help but the grandchildren or others may be more successful. (They probably know more anyway!)
Be patient! This may be the hard part! It may take several tries to get the steps down and to get them in order. That's OK! Repetition may help develop a skill that will bring about enjoyment, keep their minds active, and improve quality of life. And - again - write down the steps!
