History

“Altenheim” means “home for the aged.” The original site was at one time a summer hotel—Mount Belleview—which was located on National Road near Bethany Pike. Purchased and operated by Wheeling brewer Anton Reymann, the hotel was the most fashionable place for balls and state occasions in the days when Wheeling was the state capital.

In 1890 after having the house and grounds renovated, Anton and his wife Thusnelda gave it to a Board of Trustees to be used as a home for older women. The formal opening of Altenheim took place on May 7, 1891. After 60 years in Woodsdale, Altenheim moved to its present location in 1951. This site, the former home of John O. Schenk, was called “Uplands” and was once the A.B. Paxton residence. At the time Altenheim moved, it is estimated that the Schenk residence was approximately 26 years old.
