Activities and Events - What's Out There?

Posted: March 21, 2024, 9:24AM

Spring is upon us!  We didn't have a bad winter but it was enough that many of us took a hibernation break from getting out and doing things. I am quite ready to enjoy some summer weather!

Keep in mind that taking time to do things you enjoy is healthy.  Self-care is important.  Learning is important.  There are also opportunities for getting out with family, friends, and our care receivers.  There are many options to consider!

What do we want to do?  Want some ideas on events and activities?  Read on!

We'll be able to get our gardens and containers ready for planting.  (A friend of mine started cucumbers in his window about 6 weeks ago and he has baby cucumbers!)  I'm sure Eric at the Freeland Farm in Brooke County is thinking about spring planting 2024.  Take some time to visit Eric at the Freeland Farm.  His veggies are awesome!  Eric also offers special events throughout the season.

The Senior Support Fair will be held at the Ohio Valley Mall on May 7 - the 22nd year for the event that began in 2000 (2 years off for Covid).  Come see us from 10 am - 2 pm and learn about services and resources for older adults.

The Wheeling Food Truck Festival sponsored by NAMI Greater Wheeling in partnership with The Health Plan is scheduled for May 11 at Heritage Port with 15 food trucks lined up.  It runs from 11 am - 6 pm.

Farmers Markets will be starting everywhere with most of them running June through October.

Oglebay Resort offers summer concerts and events at Burgers and Brew on Rt 88, at Schenk Lake, and at the Kuchinka Amphitheater.  The concerts are free and most areas are accessible.  There are several free concerts in the parks throughout the summer in many communities.

Heritage BluesFest is the 2nd weekend in August.  There is ALWAYS great music.  Don't miss it!  You won't be disappointed.  Heritage Port is accessible to those who have mobility issues.

There are museums (Underground Railroad Museum in Flushing OH, Clark Gable Museum in Cadiz, Oglebay Institute Glass Museum, and the Mansion Museum at Oglebay in Wheeling, The Kruger Street Toy & Train Museum).  The WV Penitentiary offers tours (what an experience!).  The Capital Theater has several concerts and programs coming up.

The Good Zoo at Oglebay offers visitors a chance to see the animal residents of the Zoo and interact with some of them.

For those who want to get out for a cause, the Walk to End Alzheimer's, Jerry's Walk (suicide awareness), the Heart Walk, and many other events are held.

Perhaps you just want to get out and enjoy the sunshine.  Oglebay's trail system offers beautiful views of the park.  There are several benches for patrons.  Wheeling Park has remodeled the White Palace, and there are places to walk, sit, and enjoy the Park.  Grand Vue Park in Moundsville offers a beautiful setting for picnics and other activities.  Barkcamp in Belmont County, Ohio and Memorial Park in St Clairsville offer the opportunity to get out and enjoy nature.

**Altenheim Resource Services has been partnering with Family Service Upper Ohio Valley to offer programs on local neighborhoods, area history, and there is an upcoming program on Genealogy (April 19 from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm - FREE and open to all who are interested with lunch included!).

You can also do day trips that are close, affordable, and relaxing.  For those in our area, think about Sugar Creek, Salt Fork, the former Weston State Hospital (Trans Atlantic Lunatic Asylum - the facility's original name), Hocking Hills, Rogers Flea Market, The Wilds in Cumberland OH, or take on a Washington Wild Things game (special rates for older adults).  Check out the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum in Washington PA.

This is just a small sample of what is available in our surrounding area (WV/OH/PA).  Check with your Tourism Bureau, Convention & Visitors Bureau, or Chamber of Commerce for events in your area.

Come to our area and enjoy some of the events and attractions that are offered here.  We'd love to have you!

There are concerts, festivals, museums, and many other activities.  Get out and enjoy what the area offers us!
